I just finished the book Nice Work by David Lodge... The story is about Vic Wilox, who is the Managing Director at Pringles and Son, and Robyn Penrose, a Doctor in English literature.
Robyn and Vic come across each other through a project were Robyn is going to follow Vic in his daily work at his firm. This will make it easier for Robyn to understand and connect the practical industries to the academic world.
When I started to read the book I immediately understood that Robyn’s and Vic’s worlds would be linked together and that they would learn to appreciate each other. It’s interesting that people who see life in different ways are forced to work side by side. I think that’s one of the main things that the writer wants you to think about.
Robyn knows a lot about literature and has an academic background, whilst Vic is an expert on his business. Together they can accomplish so much. I think it’s a good combination to mix theory with practical work. It’s important that people in general learn to listen and understand that they can gain knowledge from each other, and by that being more open minded.

Story of stuff
I found Annie Leonard’s film very interesting and the topic is very important. She talked about a system in crisis. We consume more than we need and we haven’t got many resources left on earth.
My parents keep telling me how important it is to think about little things, such as turning the electricity off when I leave the room, recycling, buy less things and walk instead of riding the bus. I’m aware of this and also the things Annie Leonard brings up. It is important to actually do something about it and not just sit and wait for the world to change.
The government and people in power that can make a change in this society never actually think of what’s good for the people and the environment. As Annie Leonard mentioned it all comes down to keep us consumers buying new things to make as much money as possible.
The fact that some products only are created for a short term of use and the consumers will get rid of the products after six months or so is crazy. If you buy a computer as an example, it will soon be old and not hold the latest techniques. This means that you go and buy a new one after awhile. I think this is wrong and a product in that category should definitely last longer than that.
As I explained before there are things in our daily life to think about. We have to remember that material stuff is not what makes us happy in the end. We can all contribute with something if we try to change our lifestyle a little bit…

Snooping Bosses
When I started to read the article about surveillance and monitoring on employees I first thought that this is wrong. When I thought about it a second time I could understand why the business argue that their snooping is justified.
It's not a nice feeling knowing that there is a great possibility that you're being watched by someone. Different tecnical systems can easily find out exactly what you're doing. I can understand that the employers want to know if the workers are doing what they are suppose to do during work time. On the other hand I think people should be left alone outside work.
If the workers are being monitored I think they should be aware of it and also know what kind of system the bosses use to monitor them. If that's the case I think you could say that the snooping is justified.
For me the biggest problem lies within people not trusting eachother . We want to feel safe and secure, but is this the right way? I think it's going to far if we are about to be controlled all the time. At least let the private life maintain private.
